I found this recipe on Pinterest and have made it a lot this summer. My family loves it, even the kids who usually have a thing about beans!

Yes! The nice thing about this recipe is that it will work with any style of canned baked beans. It impacts the flavor, of course, but as long as you like the canned version it will be a positive impact (e.g., I usually use Steakhouse style beans in mine). Hope you enjoy it!

@Karen – SoupAddict, Thank you for the advice. I need to leave for the picnic around 9:30am so I guess the best thing to do is get up extra early and prepare them in the morning. (I’m definitely not an early morning person (UGH) but the recipe sounds worth it.) What’s a picnic without great baked beans?!

This recipe can definitely be prepped ahead, in that you combine the ingredients and add them to your baking dish, storing it in the fridge. Then the next day, let the dish sit on the counter while the oven preheats to take the chill off, and bake it up fresh.

But as for cooking it ahead of time, there are two issues you have to overcome. One is heating the beans all the way through in the dish coming out of the fridge. I haven’t tried this myself, but I’m guessing it’s going to take most if not all of that original hour to get everything hot again. (So, you’re not saving any cooking time.)

The second issue is the possibility of the beans losing their sauciness during the twice-baked process.

If you do make it ahead, I hope you’ll stop back to let us know how it turned out.

I don’t know why I never thought to put baked beans in the oven before, but now this is the only way I’ll serve them for a special dinners. Love the caramely layer on top. People thought I spent hours on these beans – they were a hit!
